The transformation of 'How We Dream'
How We Dream, the musical identity of BBVA, has undergone a major change from the time Michele Arnese and Ulrich Reese composed it, until it came to be sung by Maico. The adaptation of a DNA in sound form is not an easy process, but producer Manuel Colmenero was able to direct and adapt the tune and turn it into a great success.
Manuel Colmenero is a very respected figure in the Spanish music industry. With more than 20 years’ experience as sound engineer, he works with artists such as Joaquin Sabina and Vetusta Morla. Educated at the Ateneo de Música Moderna in Madrid, Colmenero produces all musical styles, from rock to new metal, pop, electronic music and symphony orchestras. For this project, he was aided by Ed is dead, composer and DJ who put the spice into How We Dream.
Colmenero’s work began in the studio, putting together the different pieces of the song, as if it were a puzzle. Over the initial basis of How We Dream, each member of the band defined what contribution he could make and how to give a “Maico” touch to the song.
First, the drums and basses were recorded, afterwards the guitars and keyboards were added – in the case of the guitars, this was done from scratch, since in the original version, there was no guitar part. Finally, Miguel added the color of his voice. They were convinced that the song should have a contemporary sound, which transmitted hope to the listeners and make them want to dance.
The challenge was successfully met the new BBVA song not only is the bank´s musical identity, but expresses the dreams of all those who sing and dance to it.
