The bank organized a variety of different volunteer programs in December in every country where it has a presence. Over 1,100 volunteers participated in 36 charitable activities, which primarily entailed collecting food and toys and supporting underprivileged groups.

Given the massive influx of Ukrainian refugees leaving their country as a result of the Russian military invasion and looking for a place to live, BBVA has offered the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migrations 200 homes for refugees. The homes will be able to house up to 800 people and are spread throughout Spain, but are mostly located in Catalonia, Valencia and Andalusia.

BBVA adheres to a statement signed by 49 companies around the world to support people fleeing Ukraine and address their immediate needs. The companies involved include Adidas, Amazon, Deloitte, FedEx, L'Oréal, Pfizer, Unilever and Virgin. The initiative is part of the Tent Partnership for Refugees, a global non-profit. BBVA made  a donation of 1 million euros to improve the living conditions of refugees.

BBVA is firmly committed to working towards building a greener and more inclusive society. To this end, for the second consecutive year and on the occasion of the Annual General Meeting, the bank will make a donation of 300,000 euros to social organizations working in four areas related to the environment and inclusive growth. ATADES, Aldeas Infantiles SOS, Asociación Amica and ECODES were the winning organizations in 2022.

BBVA has launched a donation campaign amongst its customers and employees in Spain, aimed at aiding in the humanitarian crisis that Ukraine is suffering. Moreover, BBVA will enable free transfers from individuals to Ukraine from March 7.

BBVA is to donate €1 million, to be split 50/50 between UNICEF and UNHCR, to respond to the humanitarian emergency in Ukraine. This step is in addition to the donation campaign launched by the bank among its employees and customers, which has raised more than €200,000 so far.

In order to help alleviate the effects of COVID-19 on the most vulnerable, BBVA will make a charitable contribution in Spain in replacement of the traditional gift given to shareholders for the Annual General Meeting. It will be the shareholders who vote on which of four causes they prefer for the donation from this gift: social inclusion, education, health and people with disabilities.

The pandemic and the subsequent health protection measures have forced the bank to adapt the actions planned for its employees this Christmas. The traditional Christmas festivities have been replaced by global digital celebrations and a donation to three NGOs that provide support to the sectors of society that have suffered the most during the crisis.

BBVA USA announced earlier this week that it would close offices across its footprint in commemoration of Juneteenth, creating an opportunity to cultivate a deeper understanding of our individual and collective roles in standing against systemic racism and social injustice.

BBVA USA will close all offices across its footprint at 1pm Friday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth, the commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States.

I don’t have words to describe the sadness I’ve felt the past few days. The killings of George Floyd and Ahmaud Arbery have reverberated through the bank’s communities like a shockwave, amplifying the ongoing, anguished suffering of Black men and women across the country and acting as a tipping point for calls for change.

BBVA’s emblematic headquarters building in Madrid will be lit with a black ribbon for the 10 day mourning period decreed by the Spanish government, which began yesterday. The bank, which has devoted its efforts to help combat the health emergency, is therefore joining the tribute to the victims of the disease.

BBVA has launched a campaign for employees to do their part to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Employees who wish to do so, can join this cause through the campaign ‘Your contribution is worth double’ in which the bank will contribute an additional euro for every euro donated by employees.

More than 2,600 BBVA USA employees participated in the bank’s annual Week of Service during the week of Oct. 7. Employees across the bank's footprint participated in 227 events, including Habitat for Humanity projects, food bank initiatives, community clean up efforts, and financial education workshops for individuals and small businesses. Their efforts generated more than 8,000 volunteer hours across the bank’s footprint.

Numerous activities were arranged at BBVA's headquarters in Madrid in celebration of World Book Day, observed internationally on April 23. The purpose was to underscore the important role literature, specifically books, plays in culture and education.

Hurricane Harvey, one of the most damaging hurricanes in U.S. history, might have put on a show during its destructive performance across Texas, but the philanthropic efforts of BBVA Compass employees also took center stage. When a group of employees from BBVA Spain considered covering the nearly 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago (the pilgrimage to the shrine of the apostle St. James the Great in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela) by bicycle, they could have done it like almost everyone else: with a small group of friends, taking a week or more, and enjoying daily breaks. But instead, they managed to gather more than 150 people and complete the entire journey in just three days without stopping. And all for a good cause.

BBVA Executive Chairman Francisco González has reinforced the Group’s commitment to the U.S. after the most recent natural disasters. “We’re going to redouble our commitment to those affected through a number of actions,” he explained. In Houston, where he met with the city’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, he gave a message of solidarity on behalf of the entire BBVA Group. Francisco González also announced that he is going to visit Mexico City in the coming days to see first-hand the damages caused by the Sept. 19 earthquake.

A complete picture of the damage wrought by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma is still coming into focus, but what is clear is that among the hardest hit are homeowners.

As flood waters caused by Hurricane Harvey receded, thousands of south Texas residents  found themselves left with damaged homes, cars and other property in the historic storm’s wake.

Hurricane Harvey slammed into the South Texas coast in late August, bringing with it historic and unprecedented flooding and leaving a path of destruction in its wake, the exact toll of which will take weeks, months and likely even years to determine.

BBVA Compass, with nearly a quarter of its branches located in South Texas and its holding company headquarters located in Houston, felt the full force of Harvey’s lashing, with employees’ personal lives impacted, administrative buildings closed, branches closed and some flooded and ATMs knocked offline. But, as one of the top 25 largest U.S. commercial banks based on deposit market share, it was critical that operations continued with minimal interruption to serve all communities and clients.
