Carlos Torres Vila: “Education is a revolutionary force. It is the engine of opportunity and a foundation for equality”
BBVA Chair Carlos Torres Vila claimed “Education is a revolutionary force; it is the engine of opportunity and a foundation for equality” at a 'Aprendemos juntos 2030' (Learning Together 2030) event for a live audience, held today in Madrid. Carlos Torres Vila announced an international tour for this BBVA educational program, set to visit Barcelona, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Bogotá, Lima, and Montevideo in 2025.
Carlos Torres Vila emphasized that for BBVA, creating value for individuals, families, communities, countries, and ultimately the world is a key goal. This is achieved through its core mission of financing vital projects that drive progress.
Speaking to an audience of over 500 attendees at the Palacio de la Prensa on Madrid’s Gran Vía, the BBVA Chair reminded the audience that 'Aprendemos juntos' (Learning Together) began nearly seven years ago as a local initiative in Spain. This platform, which resonates with the emotions and experiences of millions, has since gone global, becoming a benchmark in education focused on sustainability and inclusiveness. This new in-person format seeks to deepen that connection and continue inspiring society.
'Aprendemos juntos' (Learning Together) has surpassed all the expectations set at its inception. "The program has reached nearly 4 billion views and amassed 10 million followers. It connects with vast audiences, creating a significant impact on society and individuals, with tremendous reach, particularly in the Spanish-speaking world," he emphasized.
In his discussion with Gonzalo Madrid, founder and strategy director of the agency We are Asombro, the BBVA Chair shared his perspective on topics such as education, leadership, and his definition of success. “Education is a revolutionary force; it is the engine of opportunity and a foundation for equality. On a personal level, it demands considerable effort, but the rewards are exponential, fueling a desire for continuous learning,” he stated. He further emphasized that “Quality education is essential for cultivating creativity, curiosity, and innovation. It is also the antidote to misinformation and polarization."
On the topic of leadership, Carlos Torres Vila emphasized that true leadership begins with the ability to manage oneself. “I place great value on being genuine, having intellectual independence, and maintaining independence of judgment,” he noted. When it comes to success, he believes it is more closely tied to effort, the actions you take, and the way you approach them: essentially focusing more on the journey than the outcome. “This perspective on success is what I value most, as it helps to de-dramatize the result,” he explained.
Carlos Torres Vila wrapped up his talk with several key recommendations: always continue learning with an open mind; act according to your values without being overly focused on the outcome; remain authentic; and strive to make a positive impact on the world and the people around you.
