BBVA, Europe’s top-ranked bank for the fifth year running in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for 2024
For the fifth year running, BBVA earned the best score in the banking category in Europe and finished joint third globally in the latest S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). Rating agency S&P carries out this CSA to determine those companies that make its Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
Only the top 10 percent of companies in each sector make the cut for their inclusion on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index 2024. A total of 25 banks from around the world secured their place on this year’s S&P sustainability index.
BBVA earned a total score of 89 points out of 100, five points more than in the previous edition. The bank achieved 91 points in the economic and corporate governance dimension (84 in 2023), 76 points in the environmental dimension (70 in 2023), and 93 points in the social dimension (89 in 2023). In addition, the bank earned the highest score possible (100 points) in relation to transparency and reporting; tax strategy; human rights; and customer relations.
This year, more than 13,000 companies were invited to take part in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). And around 3,700 companies responded to a questionnaire featuring more than a hundred questions on environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters.
Sustainability, a strategic priority for BBVA
BBVA has made sustainability one of its six strategic priorities as it strives to combat climate change, preserve natural capital and drive inclusive growth.
In 2022, BBVA raised its target for mobilizing sustainable business in the period 2018–2025 to €300 billion, three times its initial target. From 2018 to September 2024, BBVA has mobilized €276 billion in sustainable business, placing it ahead of the curve.
In climate action, BBVA is making progress toward its decarbonization objectives of achieving zero net emissions in its customer portfolio by 2050. It has achieved a 24 percent reduction in absolute funded emissions in the upstream industry of the oil and gas sector, measured as of December 2023 compared to the 2021 base year. Clients actively managing their transition¹ account for 83 percent of the total loan portfolio, based on data as of September 2024, as published by the bank in its sustainability strategy.
In addition, BBVA Peru has once again made the DJSI MILA Pacific Alliance index. This index was created through a collaboration between S&P Dow Jones Indices and the Mercado Integrado Latinoamericano (MILA). The Dow Jones Sustainability MILA Pacific Alliance Index is market-cap-weighted and evaluates the performance of companies from the Chilean, Colombian, Mexican and Peruvian markets based on ESG criteria. Türkiye's Garanti BBVA achieved its highest score since 2015 in the latest S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment, which places the bank as the leading financial institution in the country.
BBVA is included in the main international sustainability indexes, including the MSCI ESG Leaders Index and FTSE4Good Index. The bank is also part of the Bloomberg Gender Equality Index.
Selection to and continued membership of these indices depends on proving consistent progress and influences eligibility in investment portfolios, which attach increasing importance to companies’ non-financial factors.
¹ According to internal transition assessment tools that consider medium-term emission reduction targets and levers for managing these emissions, as well as committed investments to implement its transition plan.
