BBVA has submitted to the Spanish National Markets and Competition authority (CNMC) a series of unprecedented measures to guarantee financial inclusion, lending to SMEs and competitiveness, especially in Catalonia and the Valencian Community, in order to facilitate a prompt authorization for the combination with Banco Sabadell. The specific commitments being presented include: BBVA will not close offices where there is no other branch nearby and will maintain the commercial terms for individuals and SMEs in those postal codes in which there are fewer than four financial institutions¹. In addition, the bank is committed to maintaining, for 18 months, the working capital lines for all SMEs², and the current total credit volume for those that work exclusively with the two banks. These commitments largely mitigate the risks identified by the CNMC, which are mostly focused on certain territories. The bank will continue to collaborate closely with the authority to finalize the commitment agreement and the authorization of the transaction as soon as possible.

¹For the purpose of competition, BBVA and Banco Sabadell are considered as a single entity.
²Except in case of financial deterioration.

A track record that has established BBVA as a crucial ally to face future challenges and thus encourage economic growth and the transformation of businesses.

The surge in online banking has heralded many benefits for customers who insist on being able to bank wherever and whenever they choose. However, the digital revolution has been harder for many older customers, who are not very Internet savvy, and for those living in villages and rural parts of Spain. Moreover, customers finding it hard to keep up with their payment obligations need solutions, such as tailoring installments to their payment capacity or having their loan refinanced. Banks have reacted to these social demands and are stepping up to the challenge.

Asia has become the world’s fastest growing economic region of the 21st century and currently plays a central role when it comes to decarbonization and global supply chains.

In 2023, the region accounted for 60 percent of global economic growth and one out of every two billion dollars of investment, according to UNCTAD data. According to Fitch, by 2050, five of the world’s 10 largest economies will be in Asia.

Driven by their domestic growth, Asian corporations have been significantly expanding their global presence and now make up more than 40 percent of the world’s largest companies, based on Fortune 500 revenues. This internationalization has accelerated under the phenomenon known as nearshoring, where producers seek to move closer to their end consumers. This has prompted many Asian companies to set up in countries where BBVA has a universal bank, such as Mexico, Spain and Türkiye.

Specifically, the bank’s app makes it possible to bank remotely easily and with total security, and offers an array of tools to help customers control their expenses and personal finances effectively.
