BBVA Mexico announces the 2022 Hackathon to develop innovative solutions

BBVA Open Innovation aims to support the digital transformation of the financial group and of the ecosystem of entrepreneurs and developers. With this aim in mind, it is bringing together talent from October 21-23, 2022 to create innovative solutions for the challenges proposed by BBVA’s business units in Mexico, Spain, Colombia, Peru and strategic partners in the ecosystem of entrepreneurs.

Organized by BBVA Mexico, there is no charge to participate in the 2022 BBVA Hackathon. This year 800 people will compete, most are between the ages of 20 and 28, with a background in teamwork, analytics and a passion for innovation. They are creative, effective communicators, proactive, and able to receive feedback, integrate agile, and communicate their ideas clearly. In this edition, AWS, Cisco, Microsoft, TCS, Google Cloud and Softtek are participating as sponsors.

Hugo Nájera Alva, Director General of Customer Solutions at BBVA Mexico, added that: “Innovation is a strategic pillar in our strategy. The bank is constantly evolving and transforming digitally to provide the best service to our customers. This is the reason we remain the bridge that connects creativity and disruption with the innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems.”

Participants must form teams of two to six members, and can build a solution from scratch in 40 uninterrupted hours. They will be able to work from home and can receive help from industry experts during the event. In addition, they will be able to use and integrate the latest technologies, products, tools, and the services of BBVA and its partners to accelerate their development by creating attractive solutions.

The challenges posed to the participants will be provided by BBVA Spain (one challenge) and the Group franchises participation in this competition: Mexico (four challenges), Colombia (one challenge) and Peru (one challenge), as well as by the sponsors AWS, Cisco, Microsoft and TCS, with a total of four challenges..

Each challenge in this competition will be related to a variety of topics such as: banking services, blockchain technology (NTF), SMEs, authentification, the metaverse, diversity and inclusion.

Some of the benefits of the event for the entrepreneurial ecosystem include promoting collaborative work, teamwork, and problem solving. Putting into practice and improving their soft skills, such as teamwork, effective communication, adapting to the environment, creating a business opportunity and setting out as a startup, as well as knowing how to transform an idea into something that changes and transforms people’s lives.

Awards

In this edition of the 2022 Hackathon, the winning team of each challenge posed by BBVA will receive 65,000 pesos. There will also be an overall champion with the best development in the competition, who will also receive 65 million pesos. The sponsors AWS, CISCO, Microsoft and TCS will be tasked with presenting the awards to the winners of the respective challenges. Assessment criteria will include innovation and creativity, user-friendliness, challenge resolution and execution.
